Hope: the strengths advantage
Hope is about expecting the best for the future and believing that positive outcomes are possible
For product and transformation leaders, it’s the strength that sustains vision, energises teams, and keeps momentum alive when everything feels like it’s too much and impossible at the same time
At the senior Head of, Director, General Manager, and C-Suite levels, hope emerges as a leadership quality that conveys optimism and resilience. Our work requires leaders who can inspire belief in what lies ahead
Examples of underuse. A Head of Product who underuses hope may be overly cautious and focus too much on risks, leaving teams demoralised, feeling hamstrung, and hesitant to innovate. A General Manager in Technology who communicates without expressing optimism risks draining energy from their teams and stakeholders, slowing progress on the important and aspirational work they have ahead of them
Examples of optimal use. A Director in Finance Transformation who applies hope well might frame setbacks as temporary, reinforcing confidence that the program will deliver long term value even when the numbers don’t quite stack up on paper right now. A Co-Founder/Chief Product Officer who demonstrates hope by articulating a compelling vision for the organisation’s future, even during market turbulence, signals unwavering belief in their product line, inspires confidence, and strengthens stakeholder commitment
Examples of overuse. Hope taken too far can become unrealistic optimism. A Head of Innovation who continually promises breakthrough results without evidence risks damaging their credibility and that of the organisation’s. A Chief Operating Officer who relies solely on hopeful messaging to get through a cost reduction program without balancing it with clear plans may frustrate their teams and eliminate the psychological safety that they worked so hard to build
The sweet spot is hope that inspires whilst remaining grounded. Product and transformation leaders who use this strength well create confidence, energise teams, and sustain performance outcomes through creating the belief a better future is ahead
Research shows that leaders who know, apply, and maximise their strengths experience higher resilience, stronger influence, and improved performance outcomes. Hope is just one of the 24 strengths that we explore in The Strengths Advantage
